Hamadan (also: Hamedan) is one of the oldest cities in Persia. The former name of Hamadan was Ekbatan, a name that is still used for manufactured carpets from the region (also Hamadan Shahrbaf). Ekbatan was the capital of the Mede tribe. Ekbatan or Hamadan Shahrbaf carpets are above-average heavy carpets with a fairly high pile. The majority of Hamadan carpets are peasant or nomad carpets - with numerous sub-provenances (the better known ones are e.g. Bibikabad, Bortschalu, Dardjasin, Hosseinabad). For the most part, the simple Hamadan carpets are knotted at home using the Turkish knot.
