The Turkmen are a nomadic ethnic group who have lived for centuries in the Transcaspian region between the Caspian Sea, the Amu Darya, the Aral Sea, the northern Afghan and north-east Persian border areas. Their warlike way of life, especially in the 19th century, made the Turkmen feared but celebrated enemies of their neighbors, but they became world famous for their outstanding carpet weaving skills. Under the most unfavorable conditions, they created works of art from wool, cotton and silk that are considered to be ethnographic treasures of the Orient. Today, almost all Turkmen, who live mainly in Iran, the former USSR and Afghanistan, have settled down.
