The city of Hereke, northwestern Turkey in the Gulf of Izmit on the Sea of Marmara, was famous for high-quality silk and wool carpets. These elegant carpets were mostly variants of Persian patterns from which they were then knotted. Excellent carpets were produced in large quantities until the mid-1990s.
