Birdjend (also Birdjand) is located in northeastern Iran in the province of Khorassan, south of Mesched. The carpets from Birdjand are also often traded as Khorassan carpets. Birdjand is the home of the Jufti knot, in which the wool threads are looped around 4 warp threads instead of 2. However, this has little effect on the solidity of the carpet. Influenced by its big brother, Mesched, delicately patterned medallion designs are often found, but also patterned Botteh designs on a light background (influenced by the Moud region) are often found in Birdjand carpets.
