Kerman is the capital of the province of the same name in southern Iran. Kerman carpets were mentioned in a treatise by the secretary of the famous Shah Abbas I (1587-1629), who spoke of carpets with gold and silver threads. From the 16th century onwards, Kerman carpets can be traced back to the surviving examples of every century. Since the turn of the 20th century, Kerman, with its large factories, has again become one of the most important weaving areas in Iran. Kerman is probably the only major city in Persia whose majority of the population lives from carpet production. The most famous of the approximately 30 villages in the Kerman area where carpets are produced is called Ravar (now mostly called Lavar due to a sound shift). Merchants from Kerman have particularly high-quality pieces made there according to patterns. Particularly fine pieces came and still come from Ravar, including figurative and rich floral compositions (millefleurs). The Kerman carpet is often described as the king of carpets, the carpet of kings. Dere and the new Kerman are characterized by a fine pile material, as well as by a rich floral, often baroque-looking pattern. Kerman carpets are knotted with the Persian knot, which is less common in Persian carpets; the Turkish knot is more common.
