The city of Hereke, northwestern Turkey in the Gulf of Izmit on the Sea of Marmara, was famous for high-quality silk carpets. Excellent silk carpets were produced in large quantities until the mid-1990s. When importers and Turkish producers began producing copies in China with the same patterns and knotting settings, production in Turkey almost completely came to a standstill. With rising labor costs, Turkey was no longer competitive on the market. Today, only a few carpets are produced for tourists to see. In reality, however, tourists are only sold imported Chinese silk carpets that are passed off as Hereke's own. This piece is still an original from Hereke.
